How to Communicate With Your Own Animals (A Simple Guide for Everyday Guardians)
By Sarah Edwards Keeling – SpiritHeart Animal Healing & Communication
One of the questions I’m asked most often is, “Sarah… can I really communicate with my animals the way you do?”
And my answer is always the same: yes, absolutely. Every animal guardian has the natural ability to communicate with their animals. You don’t need to be psychic, you don’t need special tools, and you definitely don’t need to sit cross-legged on a crystal-covered yoga mat chanting under the full moon. (Unless you enjoy that — no judgement!)2
Animal communication is something we’re born knowing how to do, but as life gets busier and noisier, we forget. The good news? It’s surprisingly easy to reconnect to this ability with a little guidance, grounding, and curiosity.
In this blog, I’m going to walk you through exactly how to start communicating with your own animals in a simple, natural way. These are the same techniques I teach in my workshops and courses, only written in a way you can try right now at home — whether you share your life with a dog, horse, cat, rabbit, reptile, or anyone else.
So… What Is Animal Communication?
Let’s clear this up first, because there are some wild ideas out there.
Animal communication — also known as intuitive or telepathic communication — is the ability to send and receive information in the form of images, feelings, sensations, and thoughts.
It’s not mind-reading, and it’s not about forcing animals to do things. Your animal isn’t going to suddenly speak English in your head. It’s much more subtle and heart-led than that.
Animals communicate naturally using:
- Images they project to you
- Emotions you suddenly feel
- Sensations in your body
- Inner “knowing” that drops in
- Behaviour and body language
- Energy shifts (which you’re already picking up without realising)
Most people are already communicating with their animals every single day — they just haven’t named it.
Your Mind Isn’t the Problem — It’s the Noise Around It
A lot of people think they can’t communicate because they’re “too in their head.” But the truth is, your mind is only noisy because life is noisy. Work, responsibilities, kids, your phone pinging every twelve seconds… it all distracts you from your intuitive senses.
When you slow things down and ground yourself, communication becomes much easier. And grounding isn’t complicated — you can do it standing in your kitchen while waiting for the kettle to boil.
Step 1: Ground Yourself
Your energy affects your animal’s energy — massively. When you’re stressed, your animal feels it. When you’re calm and present, your animal relaxes and communication flows more clearly.
Here’s the grounding method I teach all my students:
- Put both feet flat on the floor.
- Take a slow, deep breath in.
- Imagine roots growing from your feet into the earth.
- Exhale and feel your shoulders drop.
- Allow your mind to soften, just a little.
Animals recognise grounded energy instantly. You’re telling them, “I’m here. I’m listening. You’re safe.”
Step 2: Connect Through the Heart (This Is the Magic Bit)
This isn’t fluffy at all — it’s genuinely how telepathic communication works best. The heart is your strongest intuitive centre.
Here’s how to do it:
- Focus gently on your heart.
- Picture your animal’s face.
- Feel your affection for them — warm, soft, natural.
- Imagine sending that feeling to them like a gentle light.
Most animals respond immediately. You may notice:
- Their ears flick
- They turn to look at you
- They sigh
- Their breathing deepens
- They walk over to you
That’s them receiving the connection.
Step 3: Ask a Simple Question
Don’t jump in with “What trauma did you experience in 2014?”
Start with something simple, like:
- “How are you feeling today?”
- “What do you need from me?”
- “How does your body feel?”
- “Do you like this new food/bed/routine?”
Say it gently in your mind or out loud. Both work.
Then… pause. Don’t rush. Give your animal a bit of space to respond.
Step 4: Allow the Response to Come in ANY Form
This is where most people trip up — they expect a dramatic clear sentence in their head, like a WhatsApp message from their dog. It doesn’t work that way.
Instead, notice the subtle things:
You may receive:
- A mental picture
- A physical sensation (tight chest, warm belly, heavy legs)
- An emotion (sadness, joy, calm, irritation)
- A sudden knowing
- A gentle word or phrase
- A shift in their behaviour
- An image that makes no sense at first but clarifies later
Your intuition often speaks through your imagination.
That doesn’t mean you’re “making it up.” It means your intuitive channel is working.
Trust whatever comes — honestly, that’s the key.
Step 5: Say Thank You and Close the Connection
Animals love being acknowledged. They love being heard. When you finish, simply send a “thank you,” either silently or out loud.
This creates a clear beginning and end to the conversation and helps your animal understand that this new way of communicating is safe, gentle, and positive.
How to Know If It’s Working
You’ll know communication is happening when:
- Your animal’s behaviour suddenly makes more sense
- You get a feeling that matches what’s going on for them
- You get images that relate to their history or preferences
- They respond physically when you connect
- You get answers you weren’t expecting
- You feel calmer and more bonded
Most people get results far sooner than they expect — usually within minutes.
Common Mistakes (Don’t Worry, Everyone Does These)
✔ Trying too hard
If you’re straining or pushing, the connection closes. Go back to grounding.
✔ Doubting everything you receive
Doubt is the biggest block — not ability. The quieter you are, the clearer the messages become.
✔ Making it complicated
Keep it simple, light, and heart-led.
✔ Asking big questions too early
Start with daily-life questions. Build the connection first.
You Don’t Need to Be “Gifted” — You Just Need to Be Present
Animal communication isn’t about being spiritual or special.
It’s about:
- Listening
- Slowing down
- Being open
- Trusting yourself
- Respecting your animal’s individuality
Animals want to communicate. They’re brilliant at it. They’ve just been waiting for us to remember how.
Why Communicating With Your Animals Matters
When you learn to communicate intuitively with your animals:
- Your bond deepens
- Behaviour problems become clearer
- You understand their needs before they escalate
- You feel more confident as their guardian
- They feel more secure, seen, and understood
- Anxiety (yours and theirs!) reduces
- Life just becomes easier
Animals don’t want perfection — they want presence.
How to Practise Daily (Without Adding Anything to Your To-Do List)
You can build communication naturally into your normal routine:
- On walks – ask your dog how their body feels today.
- At bedtime – send them a loving thought.
- When feeding – ask if they like the meal.
- When grooming or stroking – tune into how they feel.
- When they behave oddly – ask what they’re trying to show you.
- Before appointments or travel – explain what’s happening.
The more you practise, the clearer everything becomes
