A Client's Story

I present a story of a healing journey utilizing Myofascial Release, written by a client celebrating her one year anniversary. Printed with permission of the author, whose intent is to share her experience “to encourage those who are going through the beginnings of the journey”.

The date is March 1, 2004. Here are her words:

I received my first MFR session one year ago today.

At times I think nothing has changed.  Then, other times, I realize I've come a loooong way.  I'm beginning to really "understand" how much of a journey and not a destination this is.  That is frustrating, but I am getting use to it.  These are a few of the changes I've made and lessons I've learned.

One of my largest discoveries was that I no long hate my body.  I really and truly hated myself.  I hated the appearance.  I hated the way it hurt, ached and didn't function the way I thought it should (read - expectation).  I now think my body is OK.  I have my moments of dislike, but never back to hating it.  When I start disliking my body I've realized that it is time for me to focus on what my body is saying and do what it is asking me to do.

I'm learning that my body has other responses than just pain.  There are tingles, hums, buzzes, creaks.  I no longer see all of those as negative things.  As a matter of fact, when my body creaks (especially from a stretch) I know it is a great thing!  It means my body is moving in a place where it hasn't been in a long time.  It is gaining movement.

I am becoming aware of where I position my body for daily events:  sitting at the computer, driving the car, lying in bed.  Some of these positions have perpetuated "stuck" and painful positions.

I've learned to speak my mind with less fear of being judged.  Disagreements no longer paralyze me.  I feel empowered.

I'm beginning to understand that my body has knowledge that I haven't given it credit for.  I use to think that the "experts" (doctors, nurses, therapists) knew what to do with my body when it <fill in the blank>.  I honor my "senses" about what is going on, I'm learning that my body also has a good sense about what my body needs to do to work through an event.

Structurally, I don't have as many headaches.  My pelvic pain is greatly reduced.  I can sit longer.  I also can almost touch the floor when doing a forward bend - even on my stiff days!  I use to only be able to reach just barely below my knees.  My jaw has more range of movement.

I realize that my body has been through some trauma.  It is a little banged up.  But it is still structurally sound.  During one session several months ago I saw my body as a 100 year old house.  It had not been lived in for a while, but as I toured it I found the floors and walls were solid wood.  Sturdy and well made.  I pulled back the curtains.  Dust enveloped the room, but light flooded in.  This allowed me to see around the room.  I saw great detailing which had been lovingly created by a craftsman, but has long gone unnoticed.  There are some scratches in the surface, the wall paper is coming down.  There is a lot of care that needs to be done to the house, but it is going to be a good place to life.  A place with a lot of character from the years of living.  Every now and then during a session I get flashes of my "house" and new discoveries.  I even make a creaking noise! ;)

I've been down many roads with MFR.  I always learn more about myself and my response to the world.  I look forward to more MFR and a more open mind.  I look forward to living my life proactively, not reactively.

Thank you John Barnes for following his vision and teaching so many wonderful therapists and to this chat line (and the members) for helping me moving along my MFR journey!

Peace and Hope
